On May 1, ports up and down the Pacific Coast were shut down by the ILWU to demand an end to “this bloody war and occupation for imperial domination.” The Spartacist League for many years called for workers strikes against the war. However, as part of its turn from Trotskyism to centrism, the SL abandoned this key position.

On May 1, every port on the West Coast of the United States was shut down to demand an end to the U.S. war and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. The historic May Day walkout by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) is the first time ever that an American union has struck against a U.S. war. The union ranks defied the rulings of an arbitrator, who twice ordered them to go to work.

Valentine's Day is just around the corner, but for cut flower workers around the world, the holiday is not so romantic. Around this time of year, cut flower workers are forced into long overtime and high quotas. But this Valentine's Day we can stand together in solidarity with cut flower workers by writing a letter to a Colombian businessman in the flower industry.


The disappointing truth is that behind most flowers bought in the U.S. there is a story of a flower worker in South America whose fundamental workers' rights were violated.

Should corporations have the same rights as individual citizens? Should the public good be prioritized over enhanced corporate profits? The latest case which will yield answers to these questions is the proposed merger of the health care organizations GHI and HIP. Proposed first in 2005, this merger had faced opposition from state and city officials fearful that it violates anti-monopoly laws. For municipal workers covered under these carriers the merger presents the very real threat of premium increases and limitations on care.
