What Will It Take to Defeat the War?

http://www.internationalist.org

On June 28-29, an “Open National Antiwar Conference” was held in Cleveland, called by a newly minted National Assembly to End the Iraq War and Occupation. Over objections from the conference organizers, centrally Socialist Action, the assembly voted to change the name to include reference to the war on Afghanistan, and to emphasize the connection with U.S. backing for the Zionist occupation of Palestine.

The Opportunist Left and the Port Strike Against the War

http://www.internationalist.org

On May 1, ports up and down the Pacific Coast were shut down by the ILWU to demand an end to “this bloody war and occupation for imperial domination.” The Spartacist League for many years called for workers strikes against the war. However, as part of its turn from Trotskyism to centrism, the SL abandoned this key position.

May Day Strike Against the War Shuts Down All U.S. West Coast Ports

http://www.internationalist.org

On May 1, every port on the West Coast of the United States was shut down to demand an end to the U.S. war and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. The historic May Day walkout by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) is the first time ever that an American union has struck against a U.S. war. The union ranks defied the rulings of an arbitrator, who twice ordered them to go to work.

Interview: How a hacker became a freedom fighter

node/2911

One of the founding fathers of "free software" and an esteemed elder of the hacking community, Richard Stallman has made defending people's freedoms his life's work. That usually means supplying hackers with software and attacking copyright law. But as he tells Michael Reilly, his advocacy of personal freedoms extends to the protection of true democracy and of the human rights increasingly being trampled on in the US and elsewhere

Is it true you used to live in your office?

Yes it is. I lived there for half of the 1980s and most of the 1990s.

Venezuela and the Hackers’ Revolution

http://www.greens.org

The Third International Forum on Free Knowledge was recently held in Maracaibo, Venezuela, bringing together many people interested in the development of free software worldwide. One reason Venezuela chose to host this event is that, in January 2006, their new free software law came into effect, which mandates that all government agencies migrate to free software over a two-year period. I was invited to speak about the use of free software in telecommunications. Many of the events and presentations at the event were, much like mine, of a rather technical nature.

Edwin Krales: Ensuring the Success of Fascism in Spain: the US Corporate Role

http://www.counterpunch.org

As part of my upbringing, I was taught
that the men and women who fought against the fascists in the
Spanish Civil War were giants. As a child eating in Ratner's
restaurant on New York's Lower East Side, I remember being told
in reverential tones that a person I just met had fought in Spain
with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. My parents, who were members
of the Communist Party during the civil war, could not enlist
in the Brigade because they had dependents. The Communist Party,

Socialist Party Statement on Tibet

http://spboston.org

The unfolding events in Tibet are a tragedy. The Chinese government has occupied Tibet for more than fifty years, using every conceivable method to incorporate the occupied territory into an integral part of China. Tibetan cultural and religious sites have been desecrated and Buddhist monks have been forced to sign a pledge of allegiance to China. In its desire to extract the valuable natural resources of Tibet, the Chinese government has ignored essential environmental safeguards.
